Tanoan Country Club Jewelry Sample Sale

Hi Everyone!

I was at the Tanoan Country Club this past Sunday for their Jewelry Sample Sale. It was great meeting everyone who attended, and I made some new friends among the other vendors!

The people of Albuquerque have been very welcoming and super friendly and I am looking forward to meeting more new friends and attending shows and venues throughout the summer months.

If you were at the show, please drop me a note or leave a comment, I'd love to hear from you!

Summer is almost here and I think it's going to be a great season for jewelry lovers :)

Until next time...

Topic of the Day: Native American Fetish Symbols

Hi Everyone,

I hope you're having a great day (or night!). We've been adding a lot of new things to our website lately, with many more to come.

Today I'm going to tell you a little bit about Native American fetish symbols. They have been used by many tribes going back to early history, and can have deep spiritual meaning to the bearer.

Native American fetishes symbolize animals and represent their spirits and forces of nature.

If a carving is believed to carry power, that makes it a fetish. It might be used as protection, or for a successful hunt, or to cure an illness.

For example, the bear in the pendant shown, might be thought to give the wearer strength.

The bear is thought to guide one's journey through life and one's spiritual journey.

There are many other common animal fetishes, such as buffalo, coyote, wolf, owl, turtle, and mountain lion, among others.

Here is one of our pendants featuring a bear fetish made out of turquoise:

Gemstone of the Day: Carnelian

Hi Everyone,

Today we're going to talk about Carnelian, which is a form of chalcedony.

Carnelian was once only available to nobility and the upper classes. People of high status were often buried with the stone.

Carnelian is said to give you energy and protect you from bad vibes.

Some believe it can help calm a bad temper and help you maintain a sense of humor.

If you're looking to increase your wealth, the ancients believed wearing Carnelian would help ward off poverty.

We have a beautiful Carnelian pendant in our collection that is cradled in genuine sterling silver :

Keeping Your Jewelry Sparkling - Spring Cleaning Tips

Hi Everyone,

I hope you're having a fantastic day! Spring is here and for many of us that means "Spring Cleaning"!

For many of us, this means the time to clean out the house, garage or start yard work again. But if your favorite ring, pendant, chain, or any piece of jewelry is looking a little tarnished, dim or lackluster, it could be a good time for some Jewelry Spring Cleaning.

Here are some tips to help you get that silver sparkling, and those gemstones gleaming:

POLISHING CLOTH:

A simple way to brighten up many metals is to use a polishing cloth impregnated with a safe cleaning solution. You can often buy these at a hobby store or at some jewelry stores, and at jewelry making/craft supply shops.

Carefully but firmly wipe all the surfaces of the piece of jewelry to remove fingerprints and tarnish and bring it to a beautiful luster.

MILD DISH SOAP:

You can rinse your jewelry in water and mild dish soap to clean it up, if necessary you can use a soft-bristled toothbrush to help remove any dirt.

ULTRASONIC CLEANER:

An electric ultrasonic cleaner can work well for more durable materials, it uses vibration to remove dirt and clean tarnished metals. But be careful not to use it on vulnerable stones, especially those which are soft and porous or that might have minute cracks or fissures in them, because it can destroy your jewelry. Read you owner's manual to see if it is safe for the piece of jewelry you want to clean!!! Some examples of things NOT to put in an ultrasonic cleaner: Opals, pearls and emeralds.

IONIC CLEANER:

An electric Ionic cleaner will not remove metal from your jewelry, doesn't use any harsh liquids and is safe for most stones. Again, consult you owner's manual before using to be sure it is ok for your particular piece of jewelry!! An electrical current "repels" dirt and oils and such and leaves your jewelry sparkling and clean.

COMMON MATERIALS THAT CAUSE TARNISH:

Common things that will cause tarnish are latex, wool, rubber bands, some kinds of paint and certain foods.

WOODEN JEWELRY BOXES:

If you use a wooden jewelry box, avoid having the jewelry touching the wood surface, the acids in the wood can cause most metals, including Rolled Gold, to tarnish.

CHALK:

A good tip is to put sterling or fine silver jewelry in a bag with a piece of regular white chalk.

LIMIT EXPOSURE TO AIR:

Sterling silver and other tarnishing metals will of course tarnish more quickly when exposed to air.

USE  PLASTIC WRAP OR A TREATED BAG:

Keep sterling silver from tarnishing by wrapping in it plastic wrap or using one of those specially treated storage bags.

We hope these tips will help you with your Spring Cleaning, and that you have many sunny warm days ahead to wear and enjoy your favorite sparkling jewelry!

Gemstone of the Day: Russian Jade

Hello Everyone,

I hope you're having a great day! It's almost spring and I'm sure we're not the only ones who are really looking forward to seeing some green!

Today I thought I'd write about Russian Jade, it's a beautiful green stone that seems fitting to talk about since we've just celebrated St. Patrick's Day and it's just a few days until Spring arrives (yay!).

Russian Jade is found by Lake Baikal in Russia. In many Asian cultures Jade is considered the most precious of stones.

Ancient people believed, as many do today, that Jade creates a sense of tranquility and calm, serenity and wisdom. Some say just wearing it can create a sense of peace.

Besides creating calm, it is said to protect the wearer from danger, especially on a long journey.

It is also said to bring prosperity and luck to the bearer.

The pendant pictured is sterling silver and features a beautiful Russian Jade stone.  You can find this and many other unique handcrafted works of art at out website:

Thank you for joining us today and we wish you many blessing and peace as you go about your day! :)

Today's Gemstone: Lapis!

Hi Everyone!

Here at Jewelry By Seraphim we LOVE Lapis!  We think this beautiful blue stone is amazing.

Here are a few facts about Lapis:

Lapis has been mined for over 6,000 years!

It was very popular in both Jewelry and Sculpture in Ancient Egypt.  The Assyrians and Babylonians used it for seals.  Cleopatra used powdered Lapis for eyeshadow.

The "shiny gold stuff" you see in quality Lapis is pyrite.

Ancient peoples believes Lapis gave the wearer protection and had healing properties. The Ancient Egyptians buried their dead with a Lapis scarab.

Pretty cool stuff! Here at the store, we love the brilliant blue color and the flecks of gold in our Lapis Lazuli pendants, especially the ones with the Grade A Lapis.

Here are pictures of some pieces we are offering at the website or have sold in the past:
